Power of Habit

The Power of Habit: A Paradigm Shift in Communication Skills Training for Employees

Posted on August 12, 2024

As a person who is ever striving to do better in all spheres, whether personal or professional, habits have a large influence on shaping actions and results. A seminal book that has caused a stir in the way habits are perceived is “The Power of Habit” book by Charles Duhigg. It has been a bestseller and is thought to have gone to the crux of the matter in the science of habits, how they work, and how people can change them. Such concepts will graduate to be very useful, actually, in making the training better for workers’ communication skills. In this blog, we discuss how knowledge and implementation of habits can change communication skills training, thereby rendering workplace interactions more successful and united.

The Science of Habits: Lessons from “The Power of Habit”

Charles Duhigg explains in detail in “The Power of Habit” that habits are created through a three-step loop of cue, routine, and reward. Laid down in the activity of our brains, this loop is so thoroughly laid in the habit that it becomes powerful from which it can be very hard to depart. On the other hand, understanding this loop will give us the power to create good habits and change old ones.

  1. Cue: The trigger for the habit loop.
  2. Routine: The behavior or action taken in response to the cue.
  3. Reward: The payoff or pleasure experienced from the routine, reinforcing the habit.

Duhigg introduces a concept he found during his investigations, which is the theory behind “keystone habits”. These are habits that have the capacity to spark a “small win” chain reaction and cause other behaviors to change in response. If people change these keystone habits, then there will be wide-ranging improvements in life.

Applying Habit Theory to Communications Training

Effective communication is applicable to the provocation of teamwork, management of disagreements, and maintenance of any group or body. However, too many workers suffer from bad habits in their ways of communication. To change matters for the better, the principles in “The Power of Habit” can be implemented in training for communication skills.

1. Identifying Cues in Communication:

The first step toward changing communication habits is to identify the cues that trigger the negative communication patterns. These may be a specific kind of situation, emotion, or even people. For example, a person becomes defensive when given constructive feedback, or due to overexcitement or nerves, they start cutting off their colleagues every time in a meeting.

2. New Communication Routines:

After the identification of cues, what follows is the replacement of new and healthier communication patterns. This would be done through the different training programs by facilitating exercises and role-plays through which workers can exercise their new routines. For example, an employee might practice briefly pausing and taking several deep breaths before giving any response at all, which leads to a much calmer, more positive reaction. They might be engaging in active listening skills, like giving a brief summary of the other person before moving on to their thoughts.

3. Reinforcing Positive Communication Rewards:

Establishing new communication habits, therefore, requires that you clearly point out the benefits accruing from effective communication habits. Some of these benefits include improved working relationships with workmates and increased reliance and satisfaction at work. You should, therefore indicate this fact and ensure that the practice is enforced through encouragement and recognition. This also ensures that the new habits are sustainable.

Keystone Habits in Effective Communication

The communication skills would change with time with habits like cornerstones. This habit would initiate good schemes among people who have focused on particular actions in organizations and upgrade their overall communication performance.

1. Active listening:

Active listening is a fundamental communication skill that involves full attention, understanding, response, and recall of what the other person says. Suggesting active listening as a critical habit to workers can significantly improve communication. Activities in training schemes may include focused listening without interrupting, asking questions to clarify, and providing feedback that demonstrates real understanding.

2. Regular Feedback:

Routine feedback will be much enhanced and so will overall communication and hence performance. Regular feedback timings, perhaps in the form of weekly feedback meetings or monthly reviews, will help make those giving and receiving feedback sessions part of the entrenched routine of organizational culture in the workplace. There could be training programs designed to train employees in how to give valuable criticism, and also in how to solicit it without other people going on the defensive.

3. Empathy and Understanding

All these are among the skills that must be developed for communication to be effective. With empathic employees, understanding and relating to other people’s views and feelings from colleagues garden their skills. Training plans could include tasks in which staff are required to put themselves in the other’s place and conduct empathic conversation.

Creating a Cultural of Effective Communication

With the incorporation of the teachings of “The Power of Habit,” the training for communication skills also required a commitment to an environment that respects and encourages good communication. The following is how this was to be achieved:

1. Leadership Commitment:

Good leadership is necessary for demonstrating and reinforcing good communication manners. This includes leaders who practice active listening, understanding feelings (empathy), and giving feedback frequently. Their commitment to these habits shapes the atmosphere of the entire group or team.

2. Continuous Learning:

Training for communication skills should not occur once but be an ongoing process. Organizations can consider offering regular workshops, seminars, and e-learning sections to reinforce and develop the acquired skills. Encouraging employees to keep developing their communication ability helps to ensure improvement continuously over time.

3. Rewards and Recognition:

Appreciation and incentives to practice good communication habits further underline their importance. For example, an organization could establish a recognition program that could be called “Communicator of the Month” to identify employees who show wonderful skills in ensuring good communication.

Conclusion

“The Power of Habit” is instructive in understanding how habits are formed and changed. If we apply these to training in communication skills, organizations can help their employees learn new patterns of communication that lead to more effective and harmonious work-related interactions. Awareness of the triggers of communication, establishing new habitual practices, and positive reinforcement are key steps in this process of change. We will focus on keystone habits like active listening, steady feedback, and empathy, and through that, we create a culture of communication that is productive and cooperative. Investing in communication skills training for employees based on habits is not only an improvement for personal accomplishment but also in making a working environment where everyone has an opportunity to succeed.
